History of Thanksgiving

History of Thanksgiving

The first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the colonists of Plymouth and their Native American allies, but there almost wasn't one. During the previous winter of 1620 half of the pilgrims died from disease. When the spring of 1621 arrived a Native American, by the name of Squanto, taught the pilgrims how to farm, fish, and how to avoid poisonous plants. After a successful first year of harvest they had a feast with the Wampanoag chief Massasoit to celebrate their success. On the menu there was seal, lobster, deer and swan. The feast lasted for three days.
