Early Celebration of Christmas
People in Rome didn't celebrate Christmas, they celebrated Saturnalia, which was a celebration for the god of agriculture, Saturn. During this time Roman culture was flipped. Slaves would be masters, peasants would run the city, and schools and businesses would be closed. In the fourth century, after only celebrating Easter, the Christian church decided that they would celebrate the birth of Jesus.
In the 17th century, after the Puritans took over England they cancelled Christmas, but after Charles II regained the throne, Christmas returned.
