Ms. Dix is the library media specialist Springfield CNP Elementary School. She teaches K-5 library skills and 3-5 Computer Literacy Skills. There have been changes in the libraries across the district. Some of the new things they have installed in the Springfield library are flexible seating, Chrome books, and Maker space. With the Maker space feature, the students can use kinetics, Lego's, cups, craft sticks and origami. With this, the students can make things and learn how to use their imagination, this also creates challenges for them. Another cool thing that she does with her students is coding robots to do certain tasks. The students also make use of the i pads when working with the Morning Wake Up News at the School. The students help edit, script, and record the entire news broadcast each day.
Ms. Dix also said about the tables with white boards on them, "I really like how they have so many uses." I asked Ms. Dix, "Has your way of teaching changed at all with all of these new things?" she said, "Not exactly, we now use more tools that help guide the students rather than saying this is how you do it." She likes to create challenges for her students. With the new style of her classroom, she can hand them material and they have to find out how to put all the information together to create new things. They also code with dash and dot, robots that they have borrowed from IUP. She says it's nice to watch them figure out the problems on their own.
Ms. Dix has also recently won the Herald Standard - Excellent Educator Award as she was nominated by the Connellsville School District Administrators. The best part of her job she said, is working with the staff and students.
