Ray Brown: teacher, father, and educator of future voters. I sat down with the AP Government/US History teacher to ask him how
he manages to take on the colossal task of educating future voters and how he navigated through his journey to adulthood.

The first question that I asked him was, “Why did you start teaching?” He said that he had a history teacher in school by the name
of Michael Bell. This teacher made an enormous impact on him. He reached into the heart of Mr. Brown and brought to the surface the
love of history that is very prevalent in his personality when you converse with him. I myself have a love of history and government,
but if I didn't, Mr. Brown's classroom discussions would develop it in me. He can get even the quietest students to talk about their political
views, and what they had seen on the news that previous night.

One of the questions I wanted to pursue the answer to the most was, “Where did you go college?” due to the fact that I am a college
bound student. He said that he went to college at California University of Pennsylvania. This brought great joy to me because this reinforces
my opinion that you don't have to go far to get a good education. If you have any doubts you should have an intellectual conversation with him.
This also brings happiness to me because that means that you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to go to college and get a good degree.

I then asked him the question, “How many years have you been a teacher and what is your most memorable year of teaching?” He
said that he has been teaching for 20 years and that his most memorable school year was in 2001. This is because that was the year of the 9/11
terror attacks. I know that because this event was so catastrophic to Americans that he was able to recall where he was when this tragic event
transpired. He said that he was standing with a fellow teacher in the library and the teacher told him that a plane hit a building. He even
remembered that the teacher was rocking back and forth as he was standing next to him. He then proceeded to tell me that it was the event
of the year and that was all people talked about while the investigation was going on.

As I have previously stated Mr. Brown enjoys talking politics. I asked him why he loves talking about politics. Politics is usually a
topic that most people shy away from due to conflict, but that is not the type of person Mr. Brown is. He will talk about the issues and
hear you out. This is a vital quality to have because the world that we live in nowadays is very opinionated. Having the quality to hear
people out and listen to what they have to say can diffuse many potential conflicts.

I also asked the question, “How important it is to get involved in politics?” He said that it is imperative that you get involved or at
least stay aware of what's going on. He also said to question everything and think for yourself. I believe that this is very important because
so often people are afraid to express their opinion because it may conflict with the majority. In order for our democratic system to work
properly we have to accept other people's opinions and not chastise them for having that opinion.

Lastly, I asked him to give one piece of advice for navigating life's challenges. He said “Don't take any wooden nickels”
I pondered this statement long and hard, not being able to detect the hidden meaning behind this statement. Then I found the hidden meaning
behind this message. It means, don't be fooled. This corresponds with his previous statement when he said to question everything.
This portrays the message that there is a lot of information in the world you have to have the awareness to pick out the falsities and
find the truth. I want you to think about your political identity, question authority, don’t listen to the false information that is conveyed
to you daily and most importantly, be your own person. Keep these life lessons in mind and it will make your voyage through the ocean
that is life a little less rocky.
