The Connellsville Chamber of Commerce is a local organization that promotes businesses in the Area. The Business Department in our school works with the Connellsville Chamber of Commerce regarding the Business Student of the Month. They sponsor the Business Student of the Month, which is an award that seniors can receive. It involves a chance of a scholarship, as well as a luncheon for all of the students who get the award. I was able to interview two members of the Chamber, along with Annie Trader.
Michael Bowman and Bob Topper are two local businessmen who came to our school to speak with Annie and myself. Bob Topper is a local entrepreneur who helps out small business owners by creating nonprofit charity events. Michael Bowman is the manager of the Mount Pleasant Dairy Queen, so he knows a lot about the business realm and customer service.
We were wondering what type of education it takes to become successful in business. Both men attended Westmoreland County Community College before deciding to finish their education somewhere else, one at California University, and the other at Penn State.
When asked what is the most important part of running and sustaining a successful business, they both said it is customer service. Building relationships with your customers is crucial, because they will want to come back more and more, which will increase revenue. Building relationships with your customers is important because sometimes you have a bad business day. If you are not performing up to your potential then the customers you built a relationship with will understand and continue to contribute to your business, despite not being at your best. Bob Topper believes customer service should be your number one priority, and to be a people person.
Patience is another important part of the business field. You are going to make mistakes and fail, but if you have patience and persistence you can learn from your mistakes and it will help build your list of skills.
The best way to promote your business is community involvement, which is one of the ways the Connellsville Chamber of Commerce comes into play. Advertisement is also very important to successful businesses. This can be done in different ways, such as marketing and Facebook, which are two keys to unlocking success in owning and running a business.
