The Beginning of Valentine's Day
People believe that the reason Valentines Day started, was to honor the death of Valentine, around the the 270 A.D. It is also believed that Christians wanted to celebrate the Roman god of agriculture, Faunus, and the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus.
The celebration was called Lupercalia. and it began with Roman priests traveling to the place where Romulus and Remus were cared for by a lupa, which is a she-wolf. Goat would be sacrificed and then the hide would be cut into strips, and soaked in blood. After this the priests would slap women and crops. The reason is that it was believed to make women and crops more fertile. Also, late in the day young men would pull out names of young women out of an urn, and the two would be paired for the next year, and most of the time these people would end up getting married.
