The Tradition of Exchanging Valentine's

Valentines were first exchanged in the 17th and 18th centuries in Britain.  Around the 1700's it became popular in the U.S. A woman by the name of Esther A. Howland, "Mother of the Valentine" began to sell valentines all around the U.S. in the 1840's. These valentines she made were made with scrap, which are colorful pictures. Now it is estimated that each year 1 billion valentines are sent each year. Another fun fact is that of all of the valentines bought 85% of them are bought by women.
