Erika's Walk

Imagine being condemned to a lifetime of struggles. Little girls robbed of their ability to speak, walk, crawl, or even use their hands. Some, like Erika, have a feeding tube because they can't swallow. They can have hundreds of seizures daily. They depend on their loved ones every second of the day. These little girls suffer from Rett Syndrome.

Mary Lou Miller shares a moment with her daughter Erika, who has Rett syndrome, a mutation of one of the genes located on the X chromosome.

What is Rett Syndrome?
Rett Syndrome is a devastating neurological disorder seen exclusively in young girls. In scientific circles, it is referred to as "an orphan disorder" because it occurs in one out of ten thousand female births and consequently gets little notice and very little funding. More than half of these young girls will live in wheelchairs the rest of their lives.

Why Help?
In 2007, Rett Syndrome was successfully reversed in mice, but we desperately needed funds to be raised to help see the damage of Rett Syndrome reversed in our little girls. To many, there is no greater blessing than to be able to enjoy the simple pleasures of everyday life. Erika's fate and the fate of all these little girls with this dreaded disease is unacceptable! Rett Syndrome is a life sentence that imprisons our little girls and they deserve to have the chance to live the fullest lives possible.
